Analyzing on Turning Ten by Billy Collins

What is Collins trying to say with this poem?
That turning ten years of age means your becoming a big boy. Meaning you cant have imaginary friends or the other things you use to have when your young. He also feels sick becuase he doesn't want to get closer to death.

How does he capture childhood and the process of growing up?

Because he talks about his imaginary friends and talks about his old bike. He brought up the fact that every time he turned a new age he was a different character.

What makes this poem effective?

The fact that it makes you think about the times when you were that age.

How does this fit into your own life experience?
Because when i was younger I went through alot of child hood characters, I watched alot of different cartoons growing up and always thought of myself as being the main character in each show. So I related perfectly because I went through the same stage. I always hung around older people so when I got older I started to not do the same things kids my age would  do. So I guess eliminating things from life as i got older relates me to him also.

Why The Earth Is Flat

The reason for why the earth is flat is because of gravity. When we travel across the world, we don’t travel up, around, over, and under the countries, as it would seem on the globe. The globe is our current model of the earth, but it in all actuality it’s not what it seems as far as its roundness. It is technically a flat line. All our lives we’ve been told that the earth is round, but recent research and experiments from NASA have proven that the world is actually indeed flat. If the earth were round then all the water shown on the globe would tip over into space. If the earth were to be round then when we travel we would end up going out into space instead of to our destination. Our ancestors have always believed that the earth was flat and we should continue to believe that. When we look at maps or navigation systems the directions are always shown in a straight line not in a round shape.

modest proposal

1. The real thesis in this essay was ”I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled ...” Yes I think that there are other thesis', because he also talked a lot about ways on improving Ireland and how to solve their poverty situation.

2. In the paragraphs 4, 6, and 7 the appeals to logic are put into mathematical terms like when they says "at most not above the value of 2s., which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner as instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands." Or "I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couples who are able to maintain their own children, although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom; but this being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand breeders. I again subtract fifty thousand for those women who miscarry, or whose children die by accident or disease within the year. There only remains one hundred and twenty thousand children of poor parents annually born. The question therefore is, how this number shall be reared and provided for, which, as I have already said, under the present situation of affairs, is utterly impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed." Or "I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old is no salable commodity; and even when they come to this age they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half-a-crown at most on the exchange;"  All these paragraphs are statics and numbers that describe and explain the idea that he was trying to present.

3.)   When I realized that esssay was ironic it was in paragraph 4 when he said "have always found them grossly mistaken in the computation. It is true, a child just dropped from its dam may be supported by her milk for a solar year, with little other nourishment; at most not above the value of 2s., which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner as instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands." adn it was before paragraph 10 that I realized it was ironic.4) The children, the elderly, and the parents. He thinks it's sad that the beggars have to sacrifice so much just for their family. They are in the streets begging in rags, and they are all dirty. The Irish are the ones to blame. He identifies himself with the socialist groups.
5)Yes it does. Swift does present proposals for improving functions; he says eat the children and everything will be better.

5.)  Yes, I think that the essay does function as a satirical attack, basically towards Englandand no he really didn't propse any new proposals.

6) The narrator is describing the life their and what it's like to be poor and live out as a beggar. Then he starts to discuss how we can fix the problem but he was being sarcastic about it. Then towards the end of the essay he became more serious about the problem he was discussing.

7) I felt that Swift's piece was pretty good.It strenghtens his moments. The movement has apretty big impact. He points out the flaws of that country and makes you want to do something about it. He really makes you visualize what they were going through, which makes you want to make a difference and help.

8.)  I don't think that it could be done because that's something that's so immoral.

why i want a wife -satire

1) Yes I do. His thesis is that he wants a wife who is going to take care of all his needs!
2) to show what he wants in a wife.
3) yes , i really do think this because it is what she wants. But, no i dont thiink that person exists because no one is that perfect.i think she wrote this to express what kind of wife she wanted in life.
4) because she describes the things a wife should have or do. she organizes them from the most important to the least important. i think her standards are very good but they are too high and thats why i think this person will be hard to find. i think she wants them to respond in shock and a little humorous, because some things she says can make you giggle a little. i also think she wants them to understand her though.
5) Dear Brady,
As I read your essay I was thinking like wow this is the perfect wife. She is basically taking care of everything and anything that needs to be done. Yes, having a wife like that would be amazing. I'd be the happiest husband alive, but I don't like the idea of the wife doing everything. It takes two to have a wonderful marriage, and if the wife is doing everything then she obviously doesn't need a man in her life. In this day and age the women is more independent now, and there are less stay at home moms now. If a wife did everything you said in your essay then she would be miserable, hands down. She has no time to herself in this sistuation she always pleasing other people and not herself. Your essay is persuading to want a women like that, but it's also a turn off to me because I can't imagaine someone being treated like that. The husband is obvioulsy a bum and doesn't care about her feelings

James Thurber Satire

The Little Girl and the WolfWas the one i liked the most because it was funny.
it is something that i would probally do to a little kid. No, this was not similar to any other story i have read. He didnt really surprise me much, because there wasnt anything that really set him apart from any other author. He kind of used satire in this story by haveing the wolf dress up as the grandmother.

The Bear

I like this one the second most because it made me laugh. This really wasnt like any other story i have read. He is not surprising but he is showing me what makes him different from other authors, with the way he makes animals live human lives. He used satire by relating the bear to a drunk person.

"The Princess And The Tin Box; A Fable For Our Time"James Thurber

i like this story because it reminds me of my little brother, who gets anything he wants becuase he is spoiled. No, this wasnt really similar to any other story that i have read. He surpirised me this time because he didnt talk about animals. He didnt really use satire in this one.

valentines poem

roses are red and those violets are blue
sometime through anger, I wish to punch in your face
my heart stops beating when i look at you
i never want our love to go to waste
when i have the worst days and see your smile
we argue fight and use profanity
my day turns fantastic after a while
thats because your filled with insanity                                                                                                           i pray you never get a single gun
i am not a punk but that day i will
that will be the day i will freakin run
ur crazy brain is the size of a pill
thats is why sometimes i wish we were done
but our love is too strong and too real

4 essay thoughts

Love Is Stronger Than Death

My reaction to this article was sad, because she lost her husband. i dont know how it feels to lose a husbnad but i do know how it feels to lose a person i  your life. i know that it hurts and its hard to go through, espeacially if you were with them every day of your life. the story is also inspiring because her kids being there for her gave her the strength to move on in life. That can greatly help some one out if they go through a situation like this, because you know you have peple in your life that care for your feeling and will let you know that its okay.

Sam’s Valentine

My reation to this article was memorable. This was because the author is right about every child having a favorite teacher or a teacher to admire. My freshman year, along with every other guy,  i had a crush on my english teacher, Mrs.Christianson. She was one of the nicest coolest teachers i have ever had in my life. She was also beautiful and young, so she had a lot in common with her students and related to us on a teen level. She was very light on grading and would help me out alot with work so i could be eligible for basketball.

The True Value of Life

In this article i thought about many things, but the main thing that stayed on my mind was forgiving and forgetting. life is too short to live with grudges. Whrn she said that she forgave Eddy, it made me think about how life would be on earth if people would forgive others. there would be less crimes and less deaths. it can also make you a stronger person because you can learn from your past and correct the mistakes. it helps you build a stronger character that will benefit you and others in the future.

My Parents as Friends

I related to this article perfectly, because the relationship i have with my mom is a relationship i wouold have with my friends. i can talk to her about anything and tell her my biggest secrets. she gives me advice i also give her advice on things. shes always there for me and we have each others backs like friends do. the only time my mom is really a "mom" is if im in trouble, which never happens. I feel that alot of teens should build this type of bond with there parents because it builds trust. It also is a good thing to have your mom there as a friend because sometimes your real friends arent always there for you like they should.

reaction to assembly

My reaction to the assembly was good and bad. It was good because I now know to appreciate everything that I have in life. From the people, friends, family, role models, and my opportunities and situations. I am grateful; because I don’t or didn’t go through the things those men did when they were my age. I was surprised to see that a lot of my class mates had the same things in common when questions were asked. It made me realize that abusing drugs is something that I would never want to do because it will jeopardize my future. I play for the basketball team and just got accepted into a college, being in trouble with the law and being around drugs and drinks are the last things I want to do.
The bad isn’t much to say, but it was just making mw think about my dad a lot. He has been in prison since I was in middle school. He went to prison because of possession of drugs and he is now incarcerated for ten years. I looked at them and thought about my dad and put myself in there shoes and made up my mind to do the right thing. Many girls don’t like that stuff and I don’t want to be labeled as that guy.

Drawing: story

My drawing  Story
As I started to turn the corner in a highly intense race against my cousin with our remote control cars, he bumped into me and knocked my remote out of my hand. “You stupid cheater!” I called him as he kept going. So of course me being the older one, I pushed him back and kicked his controller under the table. We were doing 3 laps around the garage; the winner would get half of the loser’s birthday money. As me and Jaylon were racing, my brothers and my cousin rode there scooters around. The garage was pretty big so we took all of the tools and stuff and put them to one side. Of course after I won, he said I cheated, “shut up, you just mad you lost”, I said. I would like my birthday money in twenties only, I said. Just to make him mad and rub it in. Princess who is my older cousin was racing my younger brother Nicholas on scooters. As she tried to slow down she ran into the garage. CRACK! We heard as her hand with thrashing through the garage window. Her hand was probably redder then the devils eye. OOHHHHH, we all yelled scared and shocked, not knowing what grandma would do. What are we about to do, said Maurice, as her arm was gushing blood with glass in it.” Take her inside u dummy”, I yelled out loud. ”Lets go put her arm in the sink under cold water”. But wait Nick said, “who’s going to go tell grandma?” “Pssh not me”, I said. Then quickly Kevar ran upstairs and told my grandma. She ran downstairs in a hurry. “Donovan”, she yelled out loud, “hurry up”, we have to take Princess to the hospital now. My uncle picked her up from the sink as she was crying and put her in the back seat of the car and sped off with her and my grandma. We are about to all get in trouble, what are we going to do, Jaylon said. I don’t know, Maurice said. Lets just all go to sleep and maybe she will forget about yelling at us, Nick said. Well now we would just have to sit here and wait and just deal with it, when grandma comes back, if one of us get in trouble we all get in trouble was what we decided on.
About three hours later they walk back in the door and all of our heats are pounding at this point. We ran into the kitchen and seen that she had about 15 stitches, it was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen on a human body in m life. Everyone go to the basement and go sit down until, grandma said. So we all went down stairs silently not saying a word. “do y’all think we are going to get a whoopin?”, Nick said. “No, princess said, she is not even mad. “Okay good”,  I said out loud, “Jaylon I want my money too, I didn’t forget. “ he told me shut up in a mad voice, but I didn’t care at all.
That is one of the craziest moments that I’ve ever had with not just my family, but in that house. We grew up in that house and we have had so many memories, but that is the one that I will always remember like it was yesterday. We talk about that moment almost every time at family gatherings. It was a crazy life learned lesson to never race scooters in a garage. Or to sneak into a garage your not suppose to be in anyway. As for my cousin, she should jus t never use her arm as a break. Especially when she is going really fast towards a thin glass window.

5. (A) As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers.I knew then that "w-a-t-e-r" meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand.
   (B) Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word "d-o-l-l." I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it.
